Your child deserves the best education available. Here are just a few reasons students and families choose Greenbrier County Schools:
Comprehensive Curriculum
Greenbrier County Schools provides a well-rounded, comprehensive, and tuition-free curriculum that encourages critical thinking and includes a diverse array of subjects such as reading, math, science, social studies, art, music, electives, career and technical education, Universal Pre-K, special education, gifted, Advanced Placement and Dual-Enrollment classes, afterschool programs, clubs, and a full range of extracurricular academic and athletic activities. Our students fully explore their interests and develop a broad knowledge base, accessing expansive learning opportunities not available in other educational settings in the county.
Certified and Highly Qualified Teachers
Our schools employ certified and highly qualified teachers dedicated to fostering academic excellence and personal growth. Their expertise, specialization, ongoing professional development, and educational commitment help create a supportive and effective learning environment.
Accountability
We are accountable for meeting students’ learning needs. All K—8 students must take three benchmark tests yearly, and results are reported to the WV Department of Education. The WV General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) is required for students in grades 3 – 8 and 11. Teachers use formal and informal assessments daily to evaluate each student's learning needs and provide personalized instruction.
Safe Schools
Safe schools are a top priority at Greenbrier County Schools. We take a comprehensive approach to providing a secure learning environment for all students. High expectations, positive behavior support systems, and policies that guide student behavior are in place. School threats, bullying, or harassment are immediately addressed. Our Director of School Security collaborates with the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, State Police, and local law enforcement to implement safe school plans and address safety concerns that may arise. We partner with local law enforcement to coordinate their presence at all our schools. Specially trained Prevention Resource Officers (PROs) are onsite in our middle and high schools. Additionally, we have contracted security guards at all schools, safe school entryways, and we implement safe school practices daily.
Supportive Environment
Our schools emphasize building positive, supportive relationships with parents, caregivers, and the community. Collaboration between families and schools is key to student success, creating a nurturing and inclusive environment. Our student support services are broad in range and designed to meet multiple student needs. Board-certified school counselors, nurses, psychologists, behavior analysts, student support specialists, and special education specialists take caring for students to the next level. Additionally, partnerships with Communities In Schools of Greenbrier County, Rainelle Medical Center, Seneca Mental Health, and other community agencies provide vital wellness and support services to students in the school setting.
Cutting-Edge Technology
Greenbrier County Schools integrate advanced educational technology with in-person instruction at all grade levels, making learning exciting, interactive, and effective. The district's one-to-one device initiative provides laptops or tablets to kindergarten through 12th-grade students to prepare students for the digital age and enhance their learning experiences.
Afterschool Programming
Greenbrier County Schools offer a variety of free afterschool programs for students at all grade levels. These programs provide additional opportunities for enrichment, academic support, and extracurricular activities, helping students explore their interests and develop new skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Child Nutrition & Transportation Services
Our Child Nutrition Program provides nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afterschool dinner or snacks prepared by our caring team of cooks. For the past four years, all GCS students have had the opportunity to eat school meals for free through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. Our well-trained school bus operators provide daily transportation to and from school in our well-maintained fleet of school buses.
Virtual Learning Platform Option
While in-person learning is ideal for optimal student success, GCS is committed to making education accessible to everyone. We offer a virtual learning platform option that may benefit families with unique scheduling needs or those who prefer remote learning.
School Choice
Families can enroll students in the county's grade-appropriate school of choice, provided classroom space is available and transportation can be arranged. This option allows for greater flexibility and personalization in education.
Community Collaboration
Our schools have strong partnerships with local businesses and organizations, providing students with experiences ranging from rich cultural experiences to paid work-based learning opportunities. We bridge classroom knowledge with real-world experiences, preparing students for success in their careers and lives.
